Mindsets: Brainwaves and Music

My piece Mindsets for violin and live electronics sought to use a biosignal that contained mind-body integration as a control signal for audio processing effects. The violinist wore an EEG sensor, and the violinist’s “attention” and “meditative” brainstates were mapped to what I perceived as related audio processing effects on what music he is playing. My aim for this system is to demonstrate the use of a bodily action that communicates musical intentionality, i.e., mindbody signal, as a control signal for interactive music systems.
